Injection Sites: What the Labels Say

The Ozempic and Wegovy labels list the stomach area (abdomen), thigh or upper arm, and say you can inject yourself there. Mounjaro and Zepbound list the stomach area or thigh. On those two, the back of the upper arm is only for when someone else gives the injection.

Each product lists its own sites

Where to inject depends on the product. The Ozempic and Wegovy injection labels list the stomach area, thigh or upper arm, and their wording allows you to inject yourself in any of those. Mounjaro and Zepbound list the stomach area or thigh, and the back of the upper arm only when another person gives the injection. You can’t swap one product’s list for another’s.

All four labels say to rotate sites. Ozempic says to use a different site each week in the same area. Wegovy says to rotate injection sites with each dose. Mounjaro and Zepbound say to rotate with each dose. The Zepbound instructions also say to change (rotate) your injection site within the area you choose for each dose to reduce your risk of pits or thickened skin (lipodystrophy) and skin with lumps (localized cutaneous amyloidosis) at the injection sites.

Missed-dose rules differ too

Ozempic says to take a missed dose as soon as you can, within 5 days. If more than 5 days have passed, skip it and go back to your usual day. Wegovy injection says to take a missed dose if the next dose is more than 2 days away. If the next dose is less than 2 days away, skip it. If two or more Wegovy injection doses in a row are missed, the prescribing information (PI) talks about starting again at a lower dose and stepping back up.

Mounjaro and Zepbound say to take a missed dose as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours). After that, skip it. The day of the week you inject can change, as long as doses are at least 3 days (72 hours) apart. Wegovy tablets have a different rule: skip the missed dose and take the next dose the following day.

These rules are taken from the labels for reference. They aren’t instructions to change your treatment. If a product label, your own instructions, or your prescriber say something different, go by the current product information and ask your prescriber or pharmacist.

Common questions

Can I inject Mounjaro or Zepbound into my own upper arm?

Their labels list the back of the upper arm only when another person gives the injection. The stomach area or thigh are the sites listed for injecting yourself.

How long do I have to take a missed Ozempic dose?

The Ozempic label says as soon as possible within 5 days. After 5 days, skip it and go back to your usual day.

Do all four products have the same missed-dose window?

No. Ozempic uses 5 days, Wegovy injection depends on how far away the next dose is, and Mounjaro and Zepbound use 4 days.
